Biography

Tikal Smildiger began her artistic training under the mentorship of the artist María Nelly Rojas, with whom she worked for years in her studio while studying Art History and painting. Throughout her career, she has further enriched her education by completing three diplomas: "Thinking from Art" and "Art and Feminisms" from the Ministry of Culture, and "Art, Sexuality, and Culture" from the Universidad de Los Andes.

Her work develops between the countryside and the city, where she engages with materials found in her environment, using organic elements like paint and discarded or found objects as supports. Her practice is deeply connected to nature, exploring and learning from it at every step.

For Tikal, painting is the most primordial form of communication between human beings and their surroundings. She sees it as an inevitable and inexhaustible process, representing the Dharma that guides her life. In her work, the stroke becomes the first expression of the desire to communicate, socialize, and understand. Her artistic approach is enriched by incorporating other materials such as ceramics, textiles, and natural dyes, which allow her to reconnect with the cosmos, life, and universal energy.

Tikal Smildiger’s art is a constant search for connection, a dialogue between nature, materiality, and human expression. Through every stroke and form, she explores and shares a continuous learning process, integrating everything she has learned from the world and from herself into her work.
