Biography

Luisa Valderrama is a Colombian visual artist with an emphasis on sculpture and installation. Her work stems from the experience of growing up between urban and rural environments, which allows her to explore the intersection between the instinctive nature of the countryside and the mentally and physically structured dynamics of the city. Valderrama builds a dialogue between these two worlds, creating pieces that explore spatial, material, and symbolic tensions.

At first glance, her work may seem like a continuation of the minimalist tradition as it was defined in the 1960s and 1970s. Formally, this is true. However, her practice introduces an additional dimension by incorporating innovative materials, shaping them with a measured, almost geometric sensitivity. Through contained forms and carefully chosen materials, her works invite reflection on place, memory, and the relationship between the body and territory.

Valderrama holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Sculpture from Pratt Institute in New York (2018) and a double bachelor’s degree in Painting and Drawing and Art History from the Universidad de los Andes (2014). She has participated in numerous artist residencies in the United States and Colombia, including Residency Unlimited, Marble House Project, Sculpture Space, MASS MoCA, and NARA. She has received fellowships such as the More Art’s Engaging Artist Fellowship and Chashama’s Immigrant Artist Fellowship in New York. Her recent exhibitions include Removed Landscapes at Chashama 64th Street Manhattan Gallery (2021), Inaudito Magdalena, 46º1/4 National Salon of Artists (2023), and Hábitat, 18º1/4 Regional Salon of Artists of the Orinoquía and the Amazon (2024).
