El fondo del aire es rojo: Mario Opazo

El fondo del aire es rojo, project carried out by Mario Opazo between 2016 and 2023 based on his performative insertion in the province of Pisagua, Tarapacá region in northern Chile.

The project incorporates the blind Captain of memory -created for the work "The Expulsion from Paradise" (2009)-, an incarnated image that now rises from his chair, previously confined behind a wall and from where he lived the sentence of eternally ringing a bell; once standing, he wanders with his archive on his back through the Atacama Desert to the shores of the Pacific, delivering his body to an "Appearing (in sorrow)" (2022). Appearing among the dead could be the clue to a moral resurgence, spiritual growth, truth and forgiveness.
